How to Replace an Inner Tube on Your Carp Porter Wheel
A flat tyre on your barrow might be frustrating, but it doesn’t mean your session is over. Replacing the inner tube is a quick and simple job once you know the steps. With just a few tools, you’ll have your Carp Porter barrow back in action in no time.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to get you moving again.
What You’ll Need
- Tyre levers or a large flathead screwdriver
- Pump (hand or foot)
- Replacement inner tube
- Optional: Soapy water (to help release a stubborn tyre)
Step-by-Step Guide
1. Remove the Wheel
Begin by removing the wheel from the barrow.
- On most models, this means loosening a thumbscrew, removing a quick-release pin, or undoing a nut and bolt depending on your setup.
2. Deflate the Tyre Completely
Ensure the tyre is fully deflated to make removal easier.
- Press down the valve pin or remove the valve core to release all air from the tube.
3. Unseat the Tyre
Use tyre levers or a large flathead screwdriver to unseat the tyre from the rim.
- Start on one side and gently work your way around until one side of the tyre is off the rim.
- Take care not to damage the rim or tyre bead.
Tip: Soapy water around the tyre bead can help loosen a tight fit.
4. Remove the Inner Tube
With one side of the tyre free:
- Push the valve back through the rim.
- Carefully remove the old inner tube.
5. Inspect the Tyre and Rim
Before installing a new tube:
- Run your fingers along the inside of the tyre and around the rim.
- Remove any sharp objects, thorns, or debris that may have caused the flat.
Even a tiny fragment left behind can puncture your new tube.
6. Fit the New Inner Tube
Insert the new inner tube into the tyre:
- Align the valve with the rim’s valve hole.
- Feed the valve through the hole and carefully tuck the tube into the tyre cavity.
Avoid twisting or folding the tube during this step.
7. Re-seat the Tyre
Starting at the valve:
- Work the tyre bead back onto the rim using your hands or tyre levers.
- Be careful not to pinch the inner tube — this is one of the most common causes of immediate deflation after replacement.
8. Inflate the Tyre
Slowly inflate the tyre to the recommended pressure.
- You’ll find this printed on the tyre wall.
- Check that the tyre is seated evenly around the rim as you inflate.
Inflate gradually, checking for bulges or pinching as you go.
9. Reinstall the Wheel
Once inflated and seated properly:
- Reattach the wheel to your barrow.
- Ensure any thumbscrews, nuts, or pins are tightened and secure before use.
Back on the Bank
And that’s it — you’re back in business. Replacing an inner tube is a quick fix that ensures your Carp Porter barrow continues to perform at its best. If you find yourself getting frequent flats, consider upgrading to puncture-resistant tyres or using sealant tubes for added peace of mind.
