Flat Battery Guide (missing images and final prod dev check)

While our Power Barrows are designed to provide reliable and long-lasting battery life, it’s always good to be prepared for the unexpected. On rare occasions, your battery could run flat before you make it back to the car. Knowing how to handle this situation will ensure that a flat battery doesn’t ruin your fishing trip.

Early Signs of a Low Battery

Our barrows use lead-acid batteries, which typically provide some warning before they completely drain. Look out for these signs:

  • Increased Power Demand: If you need to turn the power up higher than usual to maintain your barrow’s speed, this indicates the battery is running low.

Your barrow’s hand controller features a built-in battery gauge displayed as a traffic light system:

  • Green: Fully charged and ready to go.
  • Amber: Partially discharged—recharge soon to avoid running out of power.
  • Red: The battery is nearly flat and should be recharged immediately.

It’s worth noting that the gauge may register lower than the actual battery level when the barrow is under load (e.g., carrying heavy gear). To get an accurate reading, let the barrow stand stationary for a minute before checking the gauge.

By paying attention to these indicators, you can plan ahead and recharge before the battery runs out completely.

Steps to Take If Your Battery Dies

If your battery runs flat mid-trip, don’t panic—here’s what to do:

1. Disengage the Drive Train

With our Parvalux motor, you can disengage the drive, allowing the wheel to roll freely and making the barrow easier to push manually. Here’s how:

  • Switch Off the Barrow: Ensure the barrow is powered off and stationary on a flat, level surface.
  • Locate the Clutch Mechanism: Look to the left of the wheel from the front of the barrow.
  • Disengage the Drive: Pull the clutch mechanism away from the wheel and rotate it 90 degrees on the axle. This will disengage the motor, making the barrow wheel free-running.

Your barrow will now function like a manual barrow, allowing you to push it without resistance from the motor.

2. Lighten the Load

If the barrow still feels too heavy to push, consider removing some of your gear to reduce the weight. Once the load is lighter, pushing the barrow will be much easier.

3. Make a Second Trip

Once you reach your car, unload your gear, including the battery, to further lighten the barrow. Then, return for the remaining equipment. While it may take an extra trip, this will ensure you can transport everything without overexerting yourself.

Preventing Battery Drain

A flat battery is rare, but there are simple steps you can take to ensure it doesn’t happen to you:

1. Monitor Battery Levels

  • Check the LED Indicators: Keep an eye on the LED light on your handset. If it’s yellow or red, recharge the battery as soon as possible.
  • Recognise Power Changes: If the barrow starts feeling sluggish or needs extra power to maintain speed, it’s time for a recharge.

2. Charge Promptly After Use

  • Avoid Leaving the Battery Flat: Allowing a battery to remain flat for extended periods can lead to degradation. Always recharge it after your trip.
  • Keep a Spare: For longer trips or sessions, consider carrying a fully charged spare battery. This provides peace of mind and ensures you won’t be caught out.

Troubleshooting Battery Issues

If your battery dies prematurely or doesn’t last as long as expected, there may be an issue that needs addressing.
