Waterproofing your kit (missing images)

A simple yet common question – how do you keep your gear as dry as possible on your barrow? In this short article, we’ll share a few handy tips for keeping your kit protected from the elements.
Using Barrow Covers
The most effective way to waterproof your gear is by using one of our barrow covers. The smaller size typically covers the main load space of your barrow, excluding your rods, while the larger cover is designed to protect everything on your barrow. These covers stretch to fit over your hand controller and the top of your luggage. Depending on the amount of gear you carry, some covers may even fit over your rods, though this will vary depending on your load.
Correctly fitting a barrow cover
To maximise the effectiveness of the waterproof cover, ensure it is as taut as possible. Just like with a bivvy, a tight material prevents water from pooling. However, avoid overstretching the fabric, as this could reduce its waterproof properties. Aim for a smooth, tight fit with no folds or creases to ensure no water gets trapped.
Barrow cover maintenance
Over time, the waterproofing on your cover can diminish, just like the waterproofing on a jacket. Regular use and washing can wear away its effectiveness. If you notice that your cover is no longer keeping your gear dry, consider replacing it or re-waterproofing it with a product like Nikwax.
Water Resistant barrow luggage
While our barrow luggage isn’t entirely waterproof, it is designed to be highly water-resistant. The materials used in our Dark Kamo Compac range, for example, feature an outer water-resistant layer with an internal PVC lining. These materials provide excellent protection against water ingress, so you can confidently store your gear on the barrow without worrying about it getting soaked.
Smart Packing for Extra Protection
Clever packing can also make a difference when trying to keep your gear dry. Neatly stacking your luggage on top of your bed chair helps protect it from getting wet. While wet bags and carryalls aren’t ideal, it’s far better to have them drying in your bivvy than to deal with a wet sleeping bag. For added protection, consider placing your flat mat on top of your gear – it can act as a waterproof layer for everything below. If you happen to have a wet mat, roll it up and place it over the handlebars to stop water from dripping onto your gear as you pack it away.
Conclusion
With these simple tips, you can keep your gear dry and protected while using your barrow. By using covers, ensuring proper packing, and maintaining your gear, you’ll be ready to face the elements without worrying about soggy equipment.
